SAN ANTONIO – After leading UTSA soccer through its transition into the American Athletic Conference and building the Roadrunners into one of the most dangerous defensive squads in the league, head coach Derek Pittman has agreed to a new deal that will extend his contract and keep him in San Antonio through the 2029 season, in addition to additional resources for the Roadrunners’ staff.
"I am excited to extend our commitment to Derek Pittman as our head soccer coach," said Lisa Campos, UTSA Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. "Derek has elevated our program to a championship level, developing model student-athletes on and off the field. He has embraced the San Antonio community and, under his leadership, our program has been the American Athletic Conference leader in fan attendance. I am delighted that he will remain the head coach of the Roadrunners long-term."
In addition to the culture Pittman has fully established for the Roadrunners heading into the program’s historic 20th season, he engineered a meteoric rise over the past few years that included a 2022 Conference USA Championship, the first NCAA appearance in 12 years and three of the top four most-winning seasons in program history. The Roadrunners under Pittman’s leadership have raised the on-field product at the Park West Athletics Complex so much that UTSA was able to set new attendance records and led The American in average attendance in each of their first two seasons in the league.
“My family and I are incredibly honored and grateful to continue leading the UTSA women’s soccer program,” Pittman said. “This extension is a testament to the hard work of our student-athletes, staff and the unwavering support from Dr. Campos and our administration. We’ve built a championship culture here in San Antonio, and I’m more motivated than ever to keep pushing this program forward into the future on and off the field. We are excited to begin the 20th season in our UTSA soccer history books.”
Beginning his eighth season at the helm in 2025, Pittman is the winningest coach in Roadrunners history at 54-49-19 (.520), sparked by 37-25-15 (.578) push across the past four campaigns. An important component in that stretch, Park West has become one of the toughest places to play, with the Roadrunners victorious in 68.6 percent (21-8-6) of their games at home. A defensive stalwart under Pittman’s guidance, UTSA has held opponents to one goal or less in 60 of the team’s 77 games over the past four years at a 77.9 percent rate – 80.6 percent across the past two seasons. Pittman’s Roadrunners have posted a 0.78 goals-against average through the last two years, locking in at 0.83 GAA over the past four campaigns – recording the top four seasons in UTSA history beginning with the 2021 season. The Roadrunners have been a top-three defensive squad in their respective conference for four straight years while ranking among the nation’s top 40 in GAA in three of the last four.
Starting the program’s momentum turn for UTSA, Pittman’s 2022 and 2021 squads produced landmark seasons that reshaped the program’s trajectory. In addition to catching fire to march through the 2022 Conference USA Championships for the first conference title since 2010, UTSA registered back-to-back finishes of 10-5-4 (2021) and 12-6-4 (2022) for the program's top two winning percentages. Earning the team's second program NCAA appearance, the 2022 Roadrunners gathered UTSA's second-most wins, while tying records for most conference victories (4), most points in Conference USA play (15) and highest Conference USA finish.
Pittman and the Roadrunners are slated to open the 2025 campaign and their third year in the American Athletic Conference on Aug. 14 at 7:30 p.m. with a matchup against Big 12 Conference foe Houston at Park West. UTSA will play exhibition matches against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Aug. 3 at Park West and at defending SEC Champion Texas on Aug. 9 in Austin.
