Roadrunners move up standings on final day of Nexus Collegiate

NASSAU, The Bahamas — Camryn Carreon registered her 17th career top-10 finish to help lead the UTSA women’s golf team to ninth place at the Nexus Collegiate, which wrapped up Wednesday at Albany Golf Club (par 72/6,544 yards).

Carreon entered the final round with a share of 20th place after opening with a 78-71—149 on Monday. The senior out of San Antonio Incarnate Word High School then moved into a tie for seventh thanks to a 3-under-par 69 that closed out a 2-over 218. The 2023 NCAA San Antonio Regional champion recorded four birdies as well as an eagle on the 309-yard, par-4 14th hole en route to logging the tournament’s low score of the day and her 24th career sub-70 scorecard.

Behind Carreon’s third top 10 of the season, the Roadrunners finished in sole possession of ninth with a 906 for the 54-hole event. In the final round, Olivia Williams joined Carreon with a red number as the sophomore from England fired a 70 to help UTSA post a 4-over 292, a 12-stroke improvement from their previous top round of the week. That team tally also matched Houston and Tulsa as the best score of the day, as the Roadrunners raced past Michigan (921) and ended up only eight shots behind Illinois in the team standings.

Williams’ final-round 70 featured five birdies, including four as part of a 3-under 33 on the back nine. Starting on No. 15, she actually finished her week by circling her number on four of the last five holes. After opening with rounds of 75 and 81 on Monday, she jumped into a tie for 30th (226) with her sixth par-or-better scorecard of the season.

Daniela Abonce grabbed a share of 42nd with a 230 (76-74-80), Morgan Ellison claimed 49th with a 234 (81-78-75) and Federica Tavelli Westerlund tied for 61st (82-81-78—241) to round out the UTSA lineup.

Playing as an individual, Maria Bastarrica tied for 25th with a 225 (77-75-73).

Tulsa (879) rallied past Kentucky (882) in the final round to capture the team title, while North Texas’ Ellie Roth claimed the individual crown with a 2-under 214 (72-71-71).

The Roadrunners will return to the course on Feb. 26-27 when they compete in the Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston.
