UTSA run-rules Houston in Wednesday showdown

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team run-ruled the Houston Cougars, 12-2 in seven innings, on Wednesday night at Roadrunner Field.

Matt King led the team as he went 3-for-5 at the plate, recording three runs and a pair of RBI along with a triple. Three more Roadrunners earned multi-hit performances on the night as Antonio Valdez went 2-for-4 with three runs and a RBI, Tye Odom was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Leyton Barry had a 2-for-2 night with a run. Simon Miller earned his second win of the season as he went 2.0 innings pitched while allowing no runs on just two hits.

Ryan Ward opened up the game by sitting down the first three Cougars he saw in order on a swinging strikeout, ground out and fly out. The Roadrunners jumped out to a 1-0 advantage early as Shane Sirdashney scored on a double play in the bottom of the first inning. Coming in to relieve Ward in the second, Daniel Garza got out of a bases-loaded jam to end the top of the second unscathed.

The Roadrunners added a couple more to their lead in the third inning as a single by Odom drove in King and Garrett Poston to make UTSA's lead 3-0. Fischer Kingsbery then came in to the game in the fourth inning and put up another zero on the scoreboard as he retired Houston on a double play after allowing a walk to the first batter, as well as a fly out. UTSA continued to add on more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their advantage to 5-0. With two outs and King on second, Valdez singled up the middle to drive him in. After stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error, Valdez scored on a wild pitch.

UTSA added six more runs in the sixth inning. With runners on first and second, King tripled down the right field line to drive in two. Clark Henry then followed with the second straight triple for the Roadrunners to plate King. Caleb Hill singled to left field to top off the scoring in the inning with another pair of runs to extend UTSA's lead to 11-0.

The Cougars finally put a number on the board as they scored a pair in the top of the seventh, but it was too late as a Odom double drove in Valdez to complete the mercy rule in place and lead UTSA to a 12-2 seven-inning win on Wednesday night.

The Roadrunners improve to a 3-1 record to start the season, while Houston falls to a 1-3 record.
