UTSA takes on North Texas in Monday matchup

DENTON, Texas – The UTSA women's basketball team travels to the Dallas area to face North Texas in a rare Monday matchup on Feb. 20. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+ at The Super Pit.
 
LEADING THE ROADRUNNERS
Junior Jordyn Jenkins leads the conference in scoring with 488 points, averaging 19.5 per game. Jenkins also leads the team with 190 rebounds and 33 steals. Redshirt sophomore Elyssa Coleman has done a phenomenal job on defense with a team-high 42 blocks, while also recording 158 rebounds and 248 points (second on the team in both categories). Coleman owns the top single-game blocks in the conference this season, recording a high of six blocks against FIU on Jan. 21.
 
Junior Kyra White leads the Roadrunners with 112 assists, averaging 4.5 per game. White is fourth in the conference with a 1.61 assist/turnover ratio. Freshman Sidney Love has the second-most assists on the team (46) and third-most points (199). UTSA is first in the conference with a 6.6 rebound margin, outperforming its opponents by 1009 rebounds to 844 rebounds. The Roadrunners also have a conference-high 40.36 rebounds per game. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Roadrunners (7-18, 5-11 in C-USA) are coming off a close 67-64 loss to UAB on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. Jordyn Jenkins led the Roadrunners with 19 points. Kyra White was the only other Roadrunner to score in double-digits with 10 points. Four Roadrunners – Elyssa Coleman, Hailey Atwood, Sidney Love and Maya Linton - had five rebounds apiece.
 
The Roadrunners led the way from the field, shooting 40 percent consisting of 26 made field goals. The Blazers had 18 field goals for 39.1 percent from the field. UAB had the advantage from beyond the arc with nine three-pointers to UTSA's four. The Blazers also had the foul call advantage, making 22 of 24 free throw attempts. The Roadrunners were only awarded 10 free throw shots, making eight of those. UTSA continues to dominate in the paint, scoring 36 points to UAB's 16 points in the paint. 
 
RECORD WATCHING
Jordyn Jenkins put up a career-high 37 points against UTEP on Jan. 11, 2023. The school single-game record is 41 points in a game by Tesha Smith against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 25, 2017. Jenkins currently has 488 total points this season. The program record is 583 points by Tammy Rogers in the 1990-91 season. Jenkins has averaged 19.5 points per game this season. The school record is 20.7 per game by Starlite Williams in 1986-87. 
 
With 299 career wins, head coach Karen Aston is just a single win away from 300 career wins.
 
JINKIES FOR JENKINS
Jordyn Jenkins has been named the Conference USA Player of the Week three times this season – Nov. 28, Dec. 19, and Dec. 26. Scoring a career-high 37 points against UTEP on Jan. 11, Jenkins owns the conference single-game best this season. She leads the conference in multiple categories – field goal percentage (47.5), field goals (174), points (488), points per game (19.5), rebounds (190). Amongst all Division I schools in Texas, Jenkins is the highest scoring student-athlete.  
 
Newcomer Jenkins was named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, the first Roadrunner to earn that honor. The Becky Hammon Award was first given out in 2020 and aims to celebrate those playing in the 26 mid-major conferences. 
 
Jenkins is a transfer from the University of Southern California, where she played the last two seasons. At USC, she led the team offensively in almost every category while starting in 26 of 28 games in 2021-22. Jenkins led the Trojans in total points (384/14.8 per game), free throws made (110) and field goals made (134). The Kent, Wash., native was named the Pac-12 Most Improved Player, as well as earning All-Pac 12 Honors at the end of the season.
 
SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN
North Texas holds a 10-16 record (7-9 in C-USA action) after a 67-65 win over UTEP on Saturday. The Mean Green have won two of their last five games. North Texas is 5-3 at home in conference play.  
 
Quincy Noble leads the Mean Green and is third in the conference with 438 points, averaging 16.8 points per game. She is first in the conference with 402 field goal attempts. Noble also leads the team with 46 steals. Kendall McGruder leads the team with 69 assists, while Tommisha Lampkin has a team-high 165 rebounds and 30 steals. 
 
SERIES HISTORY VS NORTH TEXAS
The Mean Green hold the 23-11 advantage over the Roadrunners in the all-times series history. UTSA and North Texas last played each other on Jan. 26, 2023, when the Mean Green defeated the Roadrunners, 54-51. Jordyn Jenkins recorded a team-high 27 rebounds and 12 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. 
 
UP NEXT: The Roadrunners return home for a pair of home games later this week, including hosting Florida Atlantic for Black History Month Game on Thursday at 7 p.m. and hosting FIU for Senior Game/Military Appreciation on Saturday at 12 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
