UTSA to tee off spring season this week at Sea Best Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's golf team will tee off the spring season this Monday-Tuesday, Jan. 30-31, at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley (par 70/6,790 yards) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
 
The Roadrunners will compete against Campbell, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, No. 9 Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, host Jacksonville, No. 40 Liberty, No. 32 Lipscomb, No. 44 Louisville, No. 42 North Florida and USC Upstate.
 
The field will play 36 holes on Monday with a 7 a.m. CT shotgun start, and the final round Is slated to tee off at 7 a.m. CT on Tuesday.

UTSA will field a lineup of Christian Fanfelle, Hunter Bott, David Harrison, Jack Wehman and Brayden Bare this week. Fanfelle, a super senior from San Antonio, paces the squad with a 71.93 stroke average, while Bott, a senior from Montgomery, Texas, ranks second on the team with a 73.18 average with Harrison (73.64) and Wehman (73.86) close behind.
 
This will mark the program's third-ever trip to the Sunshine State for a competition and the first since the 2006 Orange County Invitational in Winter Garden. Ponte Vedra Beach, the site of this week's event, also is the home of 2023 signee Brock Blais, the Class 2A individual medalist and Florida "Mr. Golf" for the 2022 season.
 
UTSA last played on Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Saint Mary's Invitational on Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Pebble Beach, California. Wehman tied for 12th place with a 2-over-par 213 and was named Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week for his performance. The sophomore from Austin helped lead the Roadrunners to ninth-place finish with an 883 (295-294-294), two shots ahead of Washington State (885) and four in front of No. 39 BYU (887).
 
The Roadrunners competed in five fall tournaments, finishing in the top 10 four times in the debut campaign for head coach Matt Wernecke. UTSA was sixth at The Clerico on Oct. 24-25 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Roadrunners placed seventh at both the season-opening Jim Rivers Intercollegiate and Trinity Forest Invitational.
