NORMAN, Okla. — Camryn Carreon and Olivia Williams posted under-par rounds to lead the UTSA women's golf team on the opening day of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club (par 70/6,112 yards).
Carreon fired a 2-under 68 and Williams posted a 69 to help the Roadrunners card a 1-under 279 and settle into 11th place after the first round of the 54-hole tournament. UTSA is one shot ahead of TCU and four strokes in front of Iowa State, while sitting only one shot behind 10th-place Tulsa in the 16-team field led by Florida State (-13).
Carreon wrote down three birdies en route to her opening-round 68, putting the senior in a tie for 15th place. The San Antonio native had a four on the 522-yard, par-5 ninth, a two on the 139-yard, par-3 11th and a two on the 180-yard, par-3 13th holes in posting her top round overall and versus par this season.
Meanwhile, Williams registered a 1-under 69 on the strength of birdies on the 298-yard, par-4 second, the 395-yard, par-4 seventh and the 530-yard, par-5 12th holes. The freshman from England has a share of 27th place after turning in the best score of her young collegiate career.
Daniela Abonce led all Roadrunners with five birdies in the opening round, including four on the front nine where she carded a 34. The freshman from Mexico fired an even-par 70 to put her in a tie for 38th with 36 holes left to play.
Lauren Rios provided the other counting score for the Roadrunners on Saturday, as the freshman from Coppell, Texas, logged a 72 that featured a birdie on the 318-yard, par-4 15th.
Morgan Ellison is one shot back of Rios in a tie for 67th after carding a 73 that was highlighted by a birdie on No. 8.
Illinois' Crystal Wang and Clemson's Chloe Holder are tied for the individual lead after each posted a 6-under 64 on Saturday.
