UTSA to play in C-USA Championship this week

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men's golf team will play in the Conference USA Championship, which will be held on Monday-Thursday, April 25-28, at Texarkana Country Club (par 72/6,969 yards) in Texarkana, Ark.

The Roadrunners will line up against No. 28 Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP and Western Kentucky.

Up first for the 13-team field is 54 holes of stroke play with each of the three rounds teeing off at 8 a.m. on Monday through Wednesday. UTSA will be paired with North Texas and Southern Miss for the first round with tee times off No. 1 beginning at 9:20 a.m.

The top four teams in the standings will advance to the match play semifinals at 8 a.m. Thursday with the two advancing squads facing off for the conference championship that afternoon.

The Roadrunners own a trio of top-five team finishes this season, including winning the Lone Star Invitational last September at TPC San Antonio and earning a runner-up finish at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate in Louisiana.

Individually, Michael Rome paces the squad with a 73.41 stroke average and the senior from Austin has placed in the top 20 five times, including sharing medalist honors at even-par 216 with Hunter Bott at the Lone Star Invitational.

Christian Fanfelle, an all-conference performer a year ago, ranks second on the team with a 73.52 scoring average and he also owns five top-20 showings this season headlined by a tie for fifth with a 6-under-par 210 (70-70-70) at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate.

Bott stands third with a 74.0 mark to go with three top 10s, including his share of the individual crown at the Lone Star Invitational, while Jack Wehman (74.83) and David Harrison (75.69) round out the top five stroke averages on the team.

UTSA finished fifth at last year's C-USA Championship behind four top-25 individual finishers. The Roadrunners carded a 4-under 860 to end up only three shots back of Charlotte for the fourth and final spot in the match play competition. Chad Sewell was 12th, Collin Clark finished 18th, while Bott and Fanfelle each grabbed a share of 23rd to lead the way.

In its conference tournament history — which dates back to the 1987 Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun) Tournament — UTSA has placed in the top five 18 times, including five runner-up finishes, the last of which came in 2019 when the Roadrunners lost a heartbreaking championship match 3-2 to Middle Tennessee with the deciding contest going to the sixth playoff hole.

Two Roadrunners have claimed individual league titles. Magnus Dohlvik recorded a 70-72-77—219 in 1997 to win the Southland crown, while John Elizondo was the Southland's medalist in 2006 after carding a 67-71-75—213.
