No. 18 Middle Tennessee escapes with semifinal win

NORFOLK, Va. – It came down to the third set on the final court but No. 18 Middle Tennessee – the top seed – managed to escape with a 4-3 win over UTSA men's tennis – the No. 5 seed – in the Conference USA Semifinals, on Saturday afternoon at Old Dominion's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

UTSA (12-12) took Middle Tennessee (26-4) to the final court despite dropping the doubles point. The match came down to the tie breaking set on court 4 in singles, a matchup between Stepan Holis and Javier Gonzalez (San Fernando, Chile) that ended in a 2-6, 7-5, 3-6 loss for Gonzalez.

"We competed well, we had them in a good position to pull the upset," UTSA head coach Sergey Avdeyev said. "Guys showed up to win today vs No. 18 team in the country. We believed we could do it and played well. I'm so proud of the guys."

The Roadrunners claimed singles points in wins from Joao Ceolin (Palotina, Brazil) on court 1, Tiago Torres (Lisbon Portugal) on court 2 and Danijal Muminovic (Tulza Bosnia) on court 5.
