UTSA drops decisions to Northwestern State and Fordham

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTSA softball team dropped games against Northwestern State and Fordham to close out the Boerner Invitational on Saturday.
 
Game one: Northwestern State
The Lady Demons swept the Roadrunners 5-0 in the first matchup of the afternoon.
 
Northwestern State took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
 
In the fourth, the Lady Demons added two more runs to increase their lead.
 
To close the game in the bottom of the sixth, Northwestern State added one more run to the board, winning the game 5-0.
 
Two Roadrunners were on the mound against the Lady Demons. Alexa Williams got the start, pitching 3.1 innings. Jamie Gilbert pitched 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. The two hits from UTSA were off the bats of Kat Ibarra and Emily Dear.
 
Game two: Fordham
A two-run seventh inning gave Fordham an 8-6 win over the Roadrunners in the second game on Saturday.
 
UTSA was on the board early in the bottom of the first. A home run from the bat of Kat Ibarra was sent to left field as the Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Rams answered with a run of their own to tie the game 1-1.
 
A solo home run from Lauren Coerver in the fourth gave UTSA a 2-1 lead, but Fordham took the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the frame, a triple RBI home run from Marena Estell to left center gave UTSA a two-run lead (5-3).
 
The Rams scored three runs in the sixth off a home run and tacked on two additional runs in the seventh to lead (8-5). A ground ball from Erykah Guerrero to short stop scored Riley Grunberg in the seventh for UTSA to close the game trailing with a final score of 8-6.
 
The Roadrunners had 10 hits against the Rams. Tatum Seith got the start on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Marena Estell came in to relieve Seith to pitch 2.1 innings with four strikeouts.
 
The Roadrunners will return to the field next weekend to open conference play when they travel to El Paso to face UTEP March 11-13. The first pitch of the series will be at 6 p.m. on Friday.
