Fanfelle paces Roadrunners on first day of Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. — Christian Fanfelle is in the top 20 and the UTSA men's golf team is tied for eighth after the first day of the 37th annual Louisiana Classics, which got underway Monday at Oakbourne Country Club (par 72/6,866 yards).
 
Fanfelle has a share of 18th place after posting a 3-under-par 36-hole total to help the Roadrunners register a 2-over 578 (293-285), good for a tie for eighth with Illinois State in the 17-team field. UTSA is one shot ahead of Conference USA foes Louisiana Tech and Rice and only three strokes back of No. 41 Little Rock.
 
Fanfelle opened the 54-hole tournament with a 2-under 70 that featured five birdies. The all-conference performer from San Antonio turned in a 71 in the afternoon on the strength of six more birdies, including four as part of a 2-under 34 on the back nine. His 11 birdies stand as the third-best total in the field.

Hunter Bott has sole possession of 24th place after recording a 1-under 143. The Montgomery native had 15 pars and a pair of birdies in a morning 71 and then wrote down three more birdies en route to an even-par 72 in the second rounds.
 
David Harrison and Jack Wehman are part of a tie for 48th at 4-over 148. Harrison, a native of Trophy Club, bounced back from a 78 in the first round with a 2-under 70 that was highlighted by four birdies and an eagle on the 552-yard, par-5 third hole. Wehman, a freshman from Austin, also had four birdies and an eagle on the 488-yard, par-5 11th as part of a 72 in the afternoon after posting a 76 for the opening 18 holes.
 
Michael Rome rounds out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 58th after posting scorecards of 76 and 73, the latter of which included four birdies.
 
Playing as an individual, Reed Foster is tied for 89th (80-77—157).
 
No. 21 Texas A&M leads the team standings at 34-under par, followed by 25th-ranked LSU (-19), North Texas (-15), Kansas State (-8), Houston (-7) and No. 17 Ole Miss (-5).
 
Texas A&M's Sam Bennett, the second-ranked player in the nation, has the individual lead at 12-under 132 (66-66).
