Sooners complete weekend series sweep, win 9-5

NORMAN, Okla. – UTSA dropped the third game of its weekend series against OU on Sunday, 9-5 as the Sooners completed the series sweep.

The game was the second part of a Sunday doubleheader between the two teams. The first game saw the Sooners win 8-3.

Oklahoma (9-5) completed the weekend sweep over UTSA (10-5) Sunday afternoon, riding a strong performance from starting pitcher Chazz Martinez. Martinez went for seven innings, allowing only three hits and one run over that span.

UTSA was found success late once Martinez exited the game. The Roadrunners went for four runs in the top of the eighth to threaten a comeback and cut the lead to 7-5. However, Oklahoma added two in the bottom of eighth to pull away and eventually won 9-5.

Offensively, the Roadrunners were held to just six hits in the game. Senior outfielder Ian Bailey accounted for two of them and while also having an RBI.

The third game featured Chazz Martinez who went seven innings and only allowed only three hits for OU. It was the third game in a row that the Sooners had a pitcher go six or more innings and deliver a solid outing.

The Sooners got the scoring started in Sunday's game two as OU put four on the board in the bottom of the second inning. A sac fly and RBI single got things started for the Sooners then, with two outs, Kendall Pettis stepped up to the plate and with a runner on belted a two-run homer.

UTSA got a run back in the top of the third as an Ian Bailey single was able to plate Jonathan Tapia, making the score 4-1 OU.

Oklahoma scored another run in the bottom of the third to restore its four-run lead, as a Diego Muniz single brought a run across and made the game 5-1.

OU would then add two runs over the sixth and seventh inning to push the lead to 7-1. The runs came via a Blake Robertson grounder and Cade Horton scored on a wild pitch.

The Roadrunners had their rally caps on in the top of the eighth as they began to mount a comeback scoring four runs in the inning. Shane Sirdashney got things started with an RBI double which scored Tapia. Then with two on, Leyton Barry belted a double down the rightfield line to score two more. The Roadrunners would close out the inning scoring one more off of a bases-loaded walk. After the top of the eighth, the game sat at 7-5.

The Sooners would have none of UTSA's comeback attempts though as OU added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Oklahoma used an RBI double and RBI sac fly to earn its extra two runs and win the game 9-5.
