Roadrunners fall to 49ers

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team fell to Charlotte 58-33 Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
 
The Roadrunners couldn't overcome an early lead from the 49ers, who started the game on a 9-2 run.
 
Charlotte opened with an early 4-0 run until Charlene Mass put UTSA on the board (4-2) at the 8:29 mark. The 49ers scored five consecutive points to push the lead (9-2) until Queen Ulabo made a basket at the 3:30 mark. Charlotte closed out the quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 20-6 after the first.
 
In the second, the Roadrunners went on a 5-0 run to bridge the gap to nine (20-11) with 4:33 remaining. For the rest of the quarter, both teams struggled to find the basket as UTSA outscored Charlotte 8-6 to trail 26-14 at the half.
 
The 49ers came out of the break on an 11-0 run to extend the led (37-14) with 4:30 remaining. Back-to-back shots from Lapraisjah Johnson and Charlene Mass brought the Roadrunners within 19 (37-18), but Charlotte finished on a 3-2 run to lead 40-20 going to the fourth.
 
UTSA continued to fight in the fourth as it opened with a 4-0 run to trail 40-24, but a 13-1 run pushed the lead once more for Charlotte. The Roadrunners finished the game on a 4-2 run.
 
The Roadrunners return to the court on Monday at Louisiana Tech. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.

  • Elena Blanding led the team with five points, while Hailey Atwood had seven boards
