Roadrunners to open indoor season this weekend at Ted Nelson Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will open the 2022 indoor season this Friday-Saturday, Jan. 14-15, when they travel to College Station for the Ted Nelson Invitational.
 
Hosted by Texas A&M at Gilliam Indoor Stadium, the two-day meet will get underway at 5 p.m. Friday with the distance medley relays and 5,000 meters and continue on Saturday beginning with field events at noon and running events at 12:30 p.m. 
  
The Roadrunners will line up against athletes from Abilene Christian, Arizona State, Louisiana, North Texas, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, SMU, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M, Texas State and UT Arlington.
 
UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox welcomes back a bevy of veterans for his 14th season at the helm of both programs.
 
Headlining the women's returnees are Danielle Spence, an All-American in the triple jump and eight-time conference medalist, Ingeborg Gruenwald, a four-time All-Conference USA performer in the jumps, and Alanah Yukich, who has finished on the podium three times in the hurdles and relays. Also back are Lacee Barnes, the discus school record-holder, and 2021 C-USA Indoor mile silver medalist Abby Balli.
 
For the men, Jack Turner returns after collecting a total of four conference medals in 2021 including setting the school record in the decathlon with a winning point-total of 7,659. UTSA 60m hurdles record-holder Bashiru Abdullahi is back as one of the league's top threats having captured the 2020 indoor crown and the silver medal a year ago. Grant Szalek logged a trio of top-three conference finishes in 2021 including winning the indoor triple jump, while Sam Healy and Joel McFarlane each earned a pair of silvers last year.
