Roadrunners open up sizeable lead after opening day of Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO — Hunter Bott and Michael Rome are tied for the individual lead and the UTSA men's golf team has opened up a 15-shot lead after the first two rounds of the Lone Star Invitational, which teed Monday at TPC San Antonio Oaks Course (par 72/7,435 yards).
 
The Roadrunners, who moved up to 34th in this week's Golfweek collegiate team rankings, are sitting at 12-under-par through 36 holes after posting rounds of 293 and 280. UTSA is 15 strokes in front of New Mexico State (+12) and 17 ahead of Lamar (+14) in the 13-team field with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.
 
Meanwhile, Bott and Rome own a share of first place with UT Arlington's Paul Gonzalez in the individual race at 2-under 142. That trio has a one-shot advantage over Texas State's Fabien Sunden in the field of 75 golfers.
 
Bott opened the event with a 1-over 73 that featured four birdies and the junior from Montgomery bounced back with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon after writing down seven more birdies, and he leads all players with 11 for the week.
 
Rome countered a 75 in the first round with a bogey-free, 5-under 67 in the afternoon to move into a tie for the 36-hole lead. The senior from Austin paces the field with 27 pars through 36 holes.
 
Jack Wehman also posted a marked improvement in his afternoon round with a 2-under 70 on the strength of seven birdies. The Austin native opened with a 75 and he is in sole possession of seventh place at 1-over par.
 
Christian Fanfelle is in a tie for ninth place at 3-over 147 after posting rounds of 73-74 behind five birdies.
 
David Harrison closes out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 24th at 6-over 150. The Trophy Club native led all Roadrunners in the opening round with an even par 72 before posting a 78 in the afternoon.
 
Competing as an individual, Reed Foster has a share of 12th at 4-over 148 after carding a 2-under 70 behind four birdies on a five-hole stretch during his second round.
 
Carson Gallaher is in a tie for 24th (73-7—150) and Patrick Kahanek is 50th (77-79—156) while also playing outside the UTSA lineup.
 
The final round is slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Admission is free.
