UTSA moves up two spots on final day of Louisville Regional

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. — The UTSA women's golf team moved up two spots and finished in 13th place on the final day of the NCAA Louisville Regional, which concluded on Wednesday at University of Louisville Golf Club (par 72/6,289 yards).

Paced by a 1-over-par 73 from Katia Mexsen, the Roadrunners carded their best round of the week with a 7-over 295 on the final day of the 54-hole tournament. UTSA finished in sole possession of 13th with an 896 (303-298-295), one shot ahead of Mercer and five in front of College of Charleston, while only four strokes behind North Florida. The 13th-place finish marks the program's second-best NCAA finish behind a 12th-place showing at the 2018 Austin Regional.

Mexsen's 73 was headlined by four birdies, as the junior was just one shot shy of her career-best round. The Torreón, Mexico, native wrote down a three on the 291-yard, par-4 sixth hole and a four on the 503-yard, par-5 ninth en route to a 1-under 35 on the front. Mexsen also had a pair of birdies on the back nine to finish with a share of the team lead of eight birdies for the week, and she finished in a tie for 41st at 8-over 224 after opening with a 77-74—151.

Ana Gonzalez was the top Roadrunner for the second time in three NCAA Regional appearances, as the four-time all-conference selection settled into a tie for 34th at 7-over 223. The senior from Monterrey, Mexico, matched her opening-round scorecard with a 2-over 74 on Wednesday in a round that was highlighted by a birdie on the 478-yard, par-5 17th hole. Gonzalez, who posted the program's top individual finish and 54-hole score of 29th and 220 at the 2018 Austin Regional, matched Mexsen with eight birdies for the event.

Hannah Holzmann carded a 10-over 226 (75-77-74) to grab a share of 51st place. The second-team All-Conference USA performer from San Antonio closed out the week with a 2-over round that featured four birdies, including back-to-back on her opening two holes, Nos. 10-11.

Camryn Carreon provided UTSA's other counting score with a 74 on the strength of four birdies, three coming on the front nine. The San Antonio native and second-team all-conference pick tied for 57th with a 227 (77-76-74) in her NCAA postseason debut.

Nicole Polivchak rounded out the lineup in a tie for 80th with a 232 that included a 1-over 73, the team's low round on Tuesday.

Florida State won the team crown with an 8-over 872, while Texas (+11), UCLA (+11), Auburn (+14), Michigan State (+14) and South Carolina (+15) earned the other five automatic qualifying spots for the NCAA Championships that begin next week in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Emma Spitz of UCLA captured individual medalist honors with an 8-under 208 (73-67-68).

UTSA now has closed the curtain on a 2020-21 season that saw the program advance to its third straight and sixth overall NCAA Regional. Carreon, Holzmann and Gonzalez all earned all-conference accolades to give the program 36 all-conference certificates in its 16-year history, including eight in four seasons under two-time C-USA Coach of the Year Summer Batiste.
