Roadrunners go 1-1 on day two of UTSA Classic

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon on day two of the UTSA Classic.
 
Game one: UT Arlington
The Roadrunners defeated UT Arlington 9-1 in five innings off three multi-run homers.
 
The Mavericks were on the board early with a solo home run in the top of the second.
 
UTSA took the lead in the bottom of the third with five runs. With one out, Madison Washington singled to left center. Kindell Brooks followed with a home run to score Washington and lead 2-1. Sydney Blakeman singled and Julia Bumford earned a walk. Lauren Coerver smacked the ball over the left field fence to lead 5-1. A ground out, single and flyout ended the inning.
 
In the fifth, Kay Ibarra opened with a single. Riley Grunberg doubled to left as Ibarra scored to lead 6-1. Taylor Medina reached on an error as Grunberg advanced to third. With two outs, Brooks hit her second homer of the day to score three runs and close out the game in a run rule.
 
Jamie Gilbert made her Roadrunner debut pitching 3.0 innings with two strikeouts.
 
Game two: Kansas
UTSA dropped a 5-2 decision to Kansas Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
 
The Jayhawks opened the game with two home runs in the first inning to lead 2-0.
 
In the top of the third, Kansas added another run from a homer to center field (3-0).
 
The Roadrunners got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Taylor Medina doubled to left center to reach scoring position. Madison Washington followed with a home run to right center as UTSA trailed 3-2.
 
The Jayhawks had back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth to clinch the win.
 
UTSA returns to action tomorrow for the final day of the tournament. The Roadrunners host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 12:30 p.m.
