UTSA comes up short to Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UTSA women's basketball team came up short to Southern Miss after a 73-66 loss Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
 
The Lady Eagles opened the game with a 4-0 run until a scoring drought and three forced turnovers kept them from pushing the lead. Mikayla Woods put the first points on the board for the Roadrunners with a free throw at the 5:13 mark as they trailed 6-1. UTSA scored four consecutive points to close the gap to three (8-5). In the final three minutes, Southern Miss went on a 6-2 run to lead 14-7 after the first.
 
In the second, the Lady Eagles opened with a 6-2 run by the 7:53 mark. UTSA hit a 7-0 run as they trailed 22-19. Yuliyana Valcheva brought the Roadrunners within two (26-24) with 3:31 remaining. Southern Miss closed out the final two minutes a 5-2 run to lead 33-27 at the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, the game stayed tight as UTSA trailed by four (37-33) with just over five minutes to go. The Lady Eagles scored seven consecutive points to push the lead (44-33). Trailing by 12, Mikayla Woods hit a 3-pointer with two seconds on the clock to bring the Roadrunners within nine (50-41) at the end of the quarter.
 
The final 10 minutes was a battle as both teams hit short scoring drives. UTSA outscored Southern Miss 25-23, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Eagles took the game.
