Roadrunners dominate in season opener

SAN ANTONIO – Holding the Lobos to just 37 points, the Roadrunners garnered their first win of the season on Wednesday at the Convocation Center.
 
Newcomer Yuliyana Valcheva recorded a team-high 17 points as UTSA scored 80 points in the season opener against Sul Ross State.
 
Through the first two quarters, the Roadrunners held the Lobos to just five points. In the first, the Roadrunners started with a 10-0 run before Sul Ross scored at the 6:19 mark. UTSA kept the Lobos from scoring the remaining of the quarter to lead 21-2. In the second, the Roadrunners scored 21 points before the Lobos posted a 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining. UTSA led 44-5 at the half.
 
Coming out of the locker room, the teams battled it out as both scored 21 points in the third. The Roadrunners and Lobos went on multiple short runs to put points on the board as UTSA led 65-26 going to the fourth.
 
In the final 10 minutes of the game, UTSA outscored Sul Ross 15-11. The Roadrunners held the Lobos to a scoring drought for more than 3:30 minutes, while hitting a 7-0 run to keep the lead and garner the win.
