Bott, Rome turn in top-15 finishes during holiday break

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA freshman Hunter Bott and junior Michael Rome each turned in a top-15 finish to highlight action for the Roadrunners in tournaments held during the holiday break in Florida.
 
Bott finished in a tie for ninth place at the Orlando International Amateur on Dec. 28-30 at Orange County National Golf Center & Lodge. The freshman from Montgomery fired a 5-under-par 209 to share ninth with seven other players in the field of more than 200 players.
 
Bott carded a 6-under 66 on the par-72 Crooked Cat course in an opening round that was highlighted by six birdies and an eagle-three on the 529-yard 14th hole. He wrote down four birdies en route to a 4-under 67 in his second round, which was played on the par-71 Panther Lake layout. Bott held on for his top-10 finish with a 76 in the final round, also contested on Panther Lake.
 
Rome tied for 13th at the New Year's Invitational on Jan. 2-5 at St. Petersburg Country Club. The Austin Westlake High School product carded a 1-under 215 to place in the top 15 in the field of more than 100 players.
 
Rome opened the 54-hole event with an even-par round of 72 on Thursday before carding a 74 on Friday. After Saturday's round was not played, he finished with a 3-under 69 on Sunday.
 
Rome also competed in the Orlando International Amateur, tying for 23rd with a 2-under 212. After posting an even-par 72 on the Crooked Cat course in the opening round, he registered a 71 and a 69 on Panther Lake on the final two days to finish in the top 25.
 
Christian Fanfelle tied for 39th in the Orlando International Amateur, as the sophomore from San Antonio posted a 74-69-72—215.
 
Additionally, Rome and Chad Sewell both made the cut at the South Beach International Amateur on Dec. 19-22 at Miami Beach Golf Club's Normandy Shores Golf Course.
 
Sewell, a junior from Conroe, carded a 71-74-75-77—297 to tie for 45th, while Rome finished in a tie for 69thwith a 73-76-79-74—302 in the field of 190 players.
 
The Roadrunners will return to the course on Jan. 27-28 when they travel to Tucson for the Arizona Intercollegiate.
