Roadrunners set for inaugural Arturo Barrios Invitational

SAN ANTONIO –
The UTSA men's and women's cross country teams continue their seasons on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M. The meet will serve as the teams' final tune-up before the Conference USA Championship (Oct. 27).
 
The event
The inaugural Arturo Barrios Invitational will be contested in College Station, Texas, at the Dale Watts cross country course with the men competing in an 8,000-meter race at 9 a.m., followed by the women running a 6,000-meter distance at 9:45 a.m.
 
Arturo Barrios lettered at Texas A&M in 1984 and 1985 after transferring from Wharton County Junior College, where he won national titles in the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m in 1983.
 
A member of the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame, Barrios was a three-time Southwest Conference champion as an Aggie and held school records at 5,000 and 10,000 meters. In 1985 he was the silver medalist in the NCAA Championships at 10,000m.
 
The competition
UTSA joins an impressive field of 28 teams, which includes a pair of nationally-ranked schools in addition to four SEC programs and six teams from the Big 12. Lining up alongside the Roadrunners at the start line are Baylor, Houston Baptist, Florida, Louisiana, LSU, McNeese State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, North Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State,Prairie View (m), Rice (m), Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, SMU (w), TCU, Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Southern (m), Texas State, Texas State, University of Guelph, UTA, UTRGV and Vanderbilt.
 
Representing the Roadrunners
Twelve men and 12 women will represent UTSA at the meet. The Roadrunner men's lineup features Omar Bekdache, Christian Castellanos, Luca Chatham, Mathew David, Hunter Hawkins, Mason Lischka, Martin Luevano, Mason Riley, Josh Rodriguez, Peter Sepulveda, Jake Smith and Christopher Wise. The 12 will be looking to improve on their 8k times as it will be the second 8k race of the season for all.
 
UTSA's women's lineup includes Abby Balli, Abigail Behring, Amber Boyd, Sarah Estrada, Olivia Flores, Colleen Gilbert, Briana Gonzalez, Charlette Janicek, Brooke Lomax, Marissa Martinez, Chloe Munoz and Rian Rodriguez. Amber Boyd, a sophomore, is making her season debut at the event, while her 11 teammates will complete their second 6k race of the year.
