Baseball scores 10 in final three innings to win series at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – UTSA scored 10 runs in the final three frames and overcame a 5-3 deficit on its way to a 13-7 win over Middle Tennessee in the Conference USA series finale on Sunday at Reese Smith Jr. Field.

The Roadrunners (24-18, 11-9 C-USA) plated four runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-5 lead, including a go-ahead RBI double by Chris Estrada. After the Blue Raiders (22-22-1, 7-13-1 C-USA) pushed across a run in the bottom of the panel, UTSA erupted for six in the top of the ninth to take a commanding 13-6 advantage.

Middle Tennessee managed an unearned run in the bottom of the final frame to cap the scoring.

The Roadrunners racked up 16 hits on the day, including five for extra bases. Ben Brookover paced the Birds with a 3 for 6 performance that included a double, a triple and three RBIs. Bryan Arias, Trent Bowles, Chris Estrada and Ryan Stacy all had two knocks apiece.

Palmer Wenzel (6-1) came out of the bullpen to earn the win, as the right-hander allowed only one run on three hits in 3.1 stanzas. Bradley Griggs followed Wenzel with a scoreless inning before the offense scored six runs to pull away.

Austin Dennis (2-2) was tagged with the loss after yielding six runs on five hits and four walks in two innings of work.

The Roadrunners will return to San Antonio to open a four-game home stand on Tuesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
