UTSA women’s basketball unveils 2017-18 schedule

SAN ANTONIO - Highlighted by three contests against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament a year ago and 14 home games, UTSA women's basketball announced its 2017-18 schedule on Monday.

The Roadrunners, who return two starters and nine letter winners, open the season with an exhibition contest against Trinity on Nov. 3, then begin the regular season at home against Sul Ross State on Nov. 10.

UTSA's first road game comes against Arizona State on Nov. 17 in Tempe, Ariz.  Last year, the Sun Devils made their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, before falling to the eventual NCAA Champion South Carolina. ASU finished the season 20-13.

The Roadrunners return to Texas for a stretch of seven consecutive contests, beginning with a home matchup versus UT-Arlington on Nov. 15. Two days later, UTSA heads to Austin to take on Texas. The Longhorns made their 30th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season, making Texas just the fourth program in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament history to make 30 or more appearances.

UTSA will then welcome Lamar, North Dakota and Northern Illinois for its annual Thanksgiving Classic. The Roadrunners are set to square off against Northern Illinois on Nov. 24 and North Dakota on Nov. 25.

The Roadrunners round out November with an appearance in the UTRGV Battle on the Border, where UTSA will take on Mississippi Valley State (Dec.1) and the Vaqueros (Dec. 2).

UTSA will then head to the west coast for tilts against San Diego (Dec.16) and Cal State Fullerton (Dec. 19) in California. The Roadrunners close out the non-conference schedule at home against Texas A&M-Commerce on Dec. 29. The Lions went 20-9 last season at the Division II level, including a 14-6 showing in the Lone Star Conference.

"We have put together a very competitive schedule highlighted by non-conference games at Texas and Arizona State," Holt said.  "We always enjoy hosting our Thanksgiving tournament and our trip to California to play the University of San Diego and Cal State Fullerton will be a good experience for our student-athletes."

After the New Year holiday, the Roadrunners will meet Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., on Jan. 5, to tip off Conference USA action. The Birds will stay on the road as they visit Rice two days later in Houston.

UTSA will bring league play to the Convocation Center for a pair of contests against Middle Tennessee (Jan.11) and Old Dominion (Jan. 13). The Roadrunners will also host conference opponents Florida Atlantic (Jan. 25), North Texas (Feb.2), UTEP (Feb.4), FIU (Feb.14), Rice (Feb.25) and UAB (March 3).

The 2018 Conference USA Championship is slated for March 7-10, at The Star in Frisco.
