UTSA cruises to 73-45 win against Weber State on Sunday

Freshman Whitney York scored a game-high 19 points on Sunday.

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA shot a season-high 52.1 percent from the floor and closed out the Wells Fargo New Year's Classic with a 73-45 victory against Weber State on Sunday.

Freshman guard Whitney York, who was named to the all tournament team, led three Roadrunners (8-4) in double figures with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Freshman guard Jordan Stark, who also earned all-classic honors, added 12 points and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while junior guard Monica Gibbs chipped in with 10 points and dished out a game-high four assists. Senior Terrie Davis tied Gibbs with four dimes.

’s (6-6) Sara Tuomi scored a team-high 16 points and hauled a game-best nine rebounds. Ali Thorderson added nine points.

UTSA jumped early on Weber State with a 12-3 lead in the first five minutes of the first half. The Wildcats went on an 18-6 run to grab their only lead of the game at 21-18 with 6:44 to play. However, the Roadrunners responded with a 17-0 run over the final six minutes and head into the locker with the 34-21 lead. York paced UTSA during that run with six points, while Stark and junior forward Tia Bogan added four points apiece.

UTSA carried its momentum into the second half by scoring the first six points to extend its lead to 40-21. Janie Rayback’s free throws ended the Wildcats scoreless drought that last over 11 minutes. UTSA pushed its lead to as many as 20 points (51-31) when Bogan nailed a jumper with 10:55 remaining. Davis’ 3-pointer increased the Roadrunner lead to 63-39 with five minutes left. The Roadrunners ended the game with a 10-6 run to seal the 28-point victory.

The Roadrunners close out their non-conference schedule against SMU on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Convocation Center.
