Freshman Whitney York scored a career-best 22 points on Sunday night.

SAN ANTONIO — Freshman Whitney York's career-high of 22 points paced the UTSA women's basketball team to a 68-60 victory over Wichita State on Sunday night at the Convocation Center.

York
continued the hot start to her career scoring in double figures for the third consecutive game. The Bryan native was 8-of-11 from the floor and recorded a career-best five steals. Junior Monica Gibbs hauled a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists. Senior Terrie Davis added 14 points and connected on two 3-pointers on the night, putting her four shy of breaking UTSA’s all-time record of 121 held by Philicia Ross.

UTSA (3-0) is off to its best start since the 1996-97 season and it is also head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair’s best start at UTSA.

Kiki Stephens led Wichita State (1-1) with team highs of 16 points and eight rebounds. Darcia Frazier chipped in with 10 points for the Shockers.

The Roadrunners built a 9-2 lead with 15:51 to go in the first half by hitting their first two shots from the field and 4-of-5 free throws. Wichita State then scored the next six points to pull within one at the 12-minute mark. Freshman Jordan Stark and Davis connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and a free throw by York pushed the lead to 11 points at intermission (35-24).

UTSA built its largest lead of the game, 44-31, on York’s jumper with 15:58 to go in the contest. The Shockers cut the deficit to one point (56-55) with 6:52 remaining and then took their first and only lead when Frazier nailed a short jumper with four minutes left. However, Davis’ second trey of the night extended the Roadrunners' lead to four (62-58) with less than two minutes to play. UTSA closed out the game by hitting 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to seal the eight-point victory.

The Roadrunners return to action next week when they host the annual UTSA Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Convocation Center.
