NACOGDOCHES — UTSA won its third consecutive team championship on Monday morning at the Southland Pre-Conference meet at Piney Woods Country Club.
Led by two-time reigning Southland Athlete of the Week Nina Herrera's seventh-place finish, the Roadrunners scored 47 points to easily defeat runner-up McNeese State, which netted 67.
Herrera clocked a 23:11.67 on the 6,000 meter loop and led five UTSA runners that placed in the top 12. The sophomore from El Paso now has been as the team's top finisher in the last four meets dating back to last fall's NCAA South Central Regional.
Sophomore Alyssa Diaz was one spot back in eighth (23:12.54), while freshman Carly Kitts also added a top-10 performance after finishing ninth in 23:15.62.
Other Roadrunners scorers included sophomores Jessica Bitterly (11th/23:49.62) and Samantha Fish (12th/23:54.49).
Stephen F. Austin's Lauren Smith won the individual crown in 21:34.25.
There will be no rest for the weary, as UTSA returns to action on Saturday at Cowboys Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla. The women's 6k will start at 9:15 a.m.
