BEAUMONT — Freshman Samantha Fish raced to a 10th-place performance and helped lead the UTSA women's cross country team to fifth at Thursday's Southland Conference Championships at Bayou Din Golf Club.

Fish, who led the Roadrunners for the fifth consecutive meet and earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top 10, covered the 6,000-meter trail in 22:04.1.

Freshman Isabel Balbontin was the next UTSA runner to cross the line, as she finished 20th in 22:38.5. Fellow first-year performer Nina Herrera was five spots behind Balbontin (25th/22:49.8), while freshmen Alyssa Diaz (40th/23:35.5) and Sarah Wedgeworth (44th/23:40.4) rounded out the Roadrunners' scorers.

Junior Courtney Nelson (51st/23:49.6) and sophomore Lauren Losoya (52nd/23:52.8) also competed for the Birds.

Stephen F. Austin won the team title with 34 points, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (78), McNeese State (116) and UT Arlington (137) also finished ahead UTSA, which scored 139 points. UT Arlington's Emily Koenig won the individual crown in 21:30.3.

"I thought Samantha ran outstanding today," women's cross country/distance coach Virginia Coindreau said. "She finished in the top 10, earned all-conference and was second among freshmen. Overall, we did well considering it was this group's first 6k. They did their best and I was extremely proud of their effort."

"Virginia did a great job with a team that was made up of mostly freshmen," Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Aaron Fox said. "For them to place in the top five and just two points out of fourth place is a great accomplishment and gives us something to build on next season."

The Roadrunners will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Waco for the NCAA South Central Regional.
