UTSA finishes fourth at Islanders Splash

CORPUS CHRISTI — Junior Albert Cardenas finished fifth, freshman Samantha Fish placed 12th and UTSA men's and women's cross country teams posted a pair of fourth-place finishes on Friday night at the Islanders Splash.

Cardenas was the men's top performer for the third time in as many meets this fall. The Converse native covered the West Guth Park five-mile strip in 26:22. Freshman Joaquin Ortegon checked in at 19th (27:46) and was the only other Roadrunner to finish among the top 20.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Patrick Kimeli won the individual title in 25:26 and helped the host Islanders win the team crown with 28 points. Texas-Pan American (46) finished in second place, while UT Arlington (95) edged UTSA by a mere point for third.

Meanwhile, Fish was the Birds' top women's finisher for the second week in a row. The Los Fresnos native ran the three-mile loop in 18:49. Freshman Courtney Haass stopped the clock in 19:12, which was good for 17th, giving UTSA two runners in the top 20.

UT Arlington's Emily Koenig won the race in 17:45, but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi saw five of its runners finish in the top 10 and the Islanders easily won the team title with 26 points. UT Arlington (55) and Texas-Pan American (77) rounded out the top three and UTSA netted 112 points in the eight-team field.

The Roadrunners will be back in action at two different meets net weekend. UTSA will send a contingent to South Bend, Ind., on Friday, Oct. 1, for the Notre Dame Invitational and the remainder of the squad will head to Seguin the next day for the Bulldogs 5K.
