SAN ANTONIO — UTSA associate track & field head coach Scott Slade recently was named an assistant coach for Team USA and he will mentor the women's distance runners at the 2012 North American, Central American, and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships, which are scheduled for July 6-8 in Mexico City.

"It is the ultimate tribute for a coach to be selected to represent his country," Slade said. "I accept this appointment with great honor and will represent the United States and UTSA with pride. Having two UTSA track & field coaches selected to Team USA staffs within the past three years shows how much our program has come to be respected."

Promoted to associate head coach for distance and cross country last July, he is in his sixth year as a member of Aaron Fox's coaching staff.

Slade led UTSA to its best finish in 14 years at October's Southland Conference Men's Cross Country Championships and Albert Cardenas' third-place performance was the best finish by a Roadrunner at the league meet since Philo Saunders' third-place effort in 1998. Cardenas went on to earn All-South Central Region honors in November. Meanwhile, the women recorded their best showing in a dozen years and Carly Kitts was tabbed the Southland Freshman of the Year.

Last spring, his runners combined to earn All-Southland accolades in six events (four indoor/two outdoor), including Cardenas, who captured a gold medal in the mile. Meanwhile, the distance medley relay team of Cardenas, Canel Cole, Crisshun Jamerson and Mike Medrano established a new program record at the prestigious New Balance Invitational. His distance crew scored more points than any team at the Southland Indoor Championships, including a 1-2-3 finish in the mile, and that helped the Roadrunners capture their league-record-tying sixth consecutive title.
