Cardenas places third to lead UTSA at Notre Dame Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Junior Albert Cardenas led the UTSA men's cross country team for the fourth meet in a row with a third-place finish and freshman Samantha Fish topped the women for the third consecutive meet on Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational.

Cardenas completed the five-mile loop in 25:09 and helped lead the Roadrunners to a seventh-place finish in the 16-team, gold division field. Junior Brandon Chiuminetta placed 39th in 26:01, while fellow third-year teammate Cole Reveal crossed the finish line seven seconds later in 48th place. UTSA netted 184 points in the team standings.

Eastern Michigan, which saw four of its runners finish in the top 10, won the team title with 47 points, edging runner-up North Central by seven points. Mike Spain (North Central) won the individual crown in 24:41.

Fish recorded a 30th-place performance in the women's three-mile trek, finishing the gold division race in 18:44. Fellow first-year teammate Isabel Balbontin cross the tape two seconds later, which was good for 34th place. The Roadrunners scored 296 points and that placed them 14th in the 19-team field.

Oakland won the team championship with 91 points, while West Virginia saw its top two runners cross the tape first and second en route to a second-place effort. Katie Gillespie won the individual title in 17:24.

The remainder of UTSA's squads are scheduled to be in action on Saturday morning at the Bulldogs 5K in Seguin.
