Roadrunners win third consecutive meet on Saturday
AUSTIN — Sophomore Mike Medrano won his third consecutive individual title and he helped lead UTSA to its third straight team championship on Saturday at the Grass Routes Grand Prix.
Medrano, the reigning Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, covered the 7,500-meter Hancock Golf Course loop in 25:22 and he easily defeated Houston's Yonas Tesfai by more than 19 seconds. The Mission native now has been the Roadrunners' top finisher at all four meets this fall.
Felow sophomore Harvinder Singh placed fourth in 25:52.38 and freshamn David Guillen was one spot behind his teammate after clocking a 25:53.72. Junior Kyle Hawley (26:21.02) and senior Daniel Balbontin (26:26.05) rounded out UTSA's scorers with their 12th- and 13th-place performances, respectively.
The Roadrunners netted 35 points and edged Houston (42) by seven points for the team crown. Sam Houston State (46) and Texas State (120) rounded out the team scores.
UTSA will return to the course in two weeks at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
