Valerio leads UTSA on opening day of Golfweek Conference Challenge
WOLCOTT, Colo. — Senior Paola Valerio is tied for 17th place after Monday's opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, which is being played on the Fazio Course at Red Sky Ranch & Golf Club (par 72/6,262 yards).
Valerio carded a pair of birdies on the front nine to go along with three bogeys for a one-over-par 73.
Meanwhile, junior Fabiola Arriaga birdied four of her final nine holes for a three over-par 75. The Torreon, Mexico, native was six-over par through nine holes before birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 8 and 9 helped her climb into a tie for 29th place.
Freshman Brogan Townend opened with birdies on two of her first four holes in her collegiate debut and she finished the day in a tie for 61st place with a 79.
Junior Taylor Newlin (80) and freshman Allie Johnston (82) will enter the second day of the event tied for 68th and 78th, respectively.
The Roadrunners tallied a score of 307 for 14th place, which is just three strokes out of the top 10 and three ahead of UCLA. Oklahoma and Pepperdine share the top spot on the leaderboard with a 286, while the Sooners’ Chirapat Jao-Javanil fired a 68 for the top individual standings.
The three-day event continues on Tuesday with tee times starting at 11 a.m. (CT).
