UTSA to compete at Armory Collegiate Invitational this weekend
SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA track & field teams will return to action this weekend when they travel to New York City for the prestigious Armory Collegiate Invitational, which is this week's U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's National Meet of the Week. The Roadrunners will send more 32 athletes (23 women/9 men) to the two-day event that is scheduled to get underway on Friday morning.
Nearly 100 teams will compete in what arguably is the top event during the NCAA's indoor season. Action gets underway at 8:30 a.m. (CT) on Friday and runs through 7 p.m. at the New Balance Track & Field Center, which is located at the historic 168th Street Armory in upper Manhattan. The UTSA men have picked up a total of four gold medals through the season's first four meets and they currently sit atop the Conference USA standings in two events. Andrew Akens leads the league in the shot put (59-2 ¼/18.04m) and Andris Vistins sits atop the weight throw rankings (55-8 ½/16.98m). Meanwhile, Taylor Reed is second in the pole vault (16-5 ½/5.02m) and UTSA has posted the circuit's second-fastest distance medley relay time (10:13.84).
The women have registered a pair of wins and set two program records through the campaign's first four contests. Alyssa Diaz, who ranks second in the conference in the 5,000 meters, clocked a school-record time of 17:07.32 in winning the Texas A&M 10-Team Invitational three weeks ago, while Lindsey Pew eatablished a new program pole vault mark in a third-place performance (12-10 ¾/3.93m) at the same meet.
