Roadrunners to conclude road trip at Lamar on Wednesday evening
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will wrap up a four-game road trip on Wednesday evening at former Southland Conference foe Lamar. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-16) are coming off last weekend's three-game sweep at the hands of Western Athletic Conference co-leader CSU Bakersfield. UTSA nearly salvaged the series with a come-from-behind victory in Sunday's finale, but CSUB got a walk-off two-run single from Frank Martinez to complete the sweep.
RJ Perucki led the Birds at the plate last weekend by hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a home run and two RBIs. The Tomball native, who has reached base in 27 consecutive games, is hitting .375 overall with team highs in doubles (10), home runs (9), RBIs (33) and total bases (91). Meanwhile, John Welborn will bring a team-leading 13-game hitting streak into Tuesday's tilt.
First-year head coach Jason Marshall will send left-hander Michael Kraft (1-4, 4.98 ERA) to the mound for his 10th start of the spring.
The Cardinals (26-11) have won five of their last eight games and they claimed two of three contests in a Southland home series against Sam Houston State last weekend.
Darian Johnson leads Lamar on offense with a .401 batting average and 30 RBIs, while V.J. Bunner is hitting .330 with 10 doubles, four homers and 22 RBIs.
Southpaw Lance Warren (0-1, 2.51 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start of the season for the Cardinals.
The two teams, who will meet for the 53rd time in the all-time series on Wednesday, have split the first 52 tilts. The Roadrunners have won five of the last seven matchups, but they lost two of three to the Cardinals last season in the Alamo City.
