COLLEGE STATION — UTSA, on the strength of three individual victories and a program record in the shot put, opened its indoor season with a runner-up performance at Saturday's three-team Texas A&M Reveille Invitational.

Leading the way was the junior distance trio of Grace Williamson, Nina Herrera and Samantha Fish.

Williamson edged sophomore teammate Stephanie Wangui by just three one-hundredths of a second for gold in the 800 meters. The Houston native circled the Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium banked oval four times in a personal-best 2:12.86.

Meanwhile, Herrera easily won the mile in 5:01.54, which was nearly four seconds faster than fellow junior Alyssa Diaz (5:05.27).

Fish was the Roadrunners' other gold medalist following her triumph in the 5k. She clocked a 17:44.43, which not only shaved more than 26 seconds off her previous PR, but it also moved her into third place on the school's all-time performance chart.

In the field, senior Zaquita McClanahan registered a pair of career bests, including an extension of her school record in the shot put. She placed second in the event with a measurement of 47-7 ¾ (14.52m), which was an improvement of a foot and an inch to the mark she established at the 2011 Houston Invitational & Multis. The Hurst native went on to record a PR in the weight throw (53-4 ½/16.27m).

Texas A&M edged UTSA for the team title by three-and-a-half points (88-84.5). Houston was third with 41.5.

The Roadrunners will return to College Station on Saturday, Jan. 12, for the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational.
