UTSA to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Wednesday twinbill
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will meet for the second time this spring when they square off in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday at Roadrunner Field. The two games will serve as UTSA's final non-conference contests of the season.
The Roadrunners (20-19), who have dropped seven of their last eight games, will look to bounce back against their former Southland Conference foe and gain momentum heading into the final nine Western Athletic Conference games of the campaign.
Junior Siera Sproul leads the team with a .356 batting average and she became the third player on the squad to reach five home runs with a solo shot in the second game of last weekend’s series at New Mexico State. Meanwhile, fellow junior Darian Blake is batting .429 with four doubles, a triple and three RBIs in her last 12 games to boost her season average to .352. The Birds own a .280 team mark and boast five hitters with an average better than .300.
The Islanders (8-31) have lost 16 of their last 18 outings, including losing two of three to Sam Houston State last weekend. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game two of the series to snap a five-game losing streak before falling in Sunday’s finale, 8-5. Led by Mickay Cochran’s .286 average, the Islanders own a .224 team mark. Cochran leads the hitters with four homers, while Meagan McKinney’s 19 RBIs are tops on the squad. Constance Brandenburg leads the pitching staff with five wins and 4.70 ERA.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 26-17, including a 12-5 mark in San Antonio. The Birds defeated the Islanders, 9-4, on March 13 in Corpus Christi.
