Roadrunners back on road this weekend to face league-leading New Mexico State
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will head back on the road this weekend for a three-game series at league-leading New Mexico State. The set will begin with a 7 p.m. (CT) tilt on Friday at the NMSU Softball Complex and it concludes with a 5 p.m. doubleheader the following day.
The Roadrunners (20-16, 5-4 WAC) will look to get back on the winning track after dropping series against San Jose State and Utah State the last two weekends. Siera Sproul leads the team with a .354 batting average, while her .316 mark in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) action is third. The Liberty Hill native already has set career highs with 29 hits, six doubles, four home runs and 15 RBIs. Meanwhile, Darian Blake will take a nine-game hitting streak into the weekend. The junior has 14 hits in conference play for a team-leading .438 average.
The UTSA pitching staff has lowered its ERA to 2.61 after posting a league-best 1.56 mark in its last nine contests. Haylee Staton (1.53) and Alyssa Vordenbaum (1.63) each own 2-2 records during WAC play, while Jolene Graham picked up the Birds’ other league victory in relief.
The Aggies (27-14, 8-1 WAC) are coming off a doubleheader split against No. 17 Arizona on Tuesday. New Mexico State won the opener for its ninth consecutive win before falling to the Wildcats in the nightcap. Led by 10th-year head coach Kathy Rodolph, the Aggies have rebounded from a loss to Louisiana Tech to open WAC play with eight consecutive league victories.
Amber Olive leads the circuit with a .425 batting average to go along with four doubles, four triples, a homer and 18 RBIs. The senior outfielder is hitting .611 (22-of-36) in WAC action to help the Aggies to a league-high .322 average in that time.
Meanwhile, Alex Newman anchors the pitching staff with a 15-8 record, a pair of saves and 2.23 ERA.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 8-7, with a 4-4 mark in Las Cruces. The Aggies picked up a 28-7 victory on Feb. 13, 2010, in the previous meeting between the two squads.
