UTSA to host Sam Houston State in weekend three-game series

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the fiendly confines of Roadrunner Field this weekend when it hosts former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State in a three-game series. The set opens with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday night before concluding the following day with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
The Roadrunners (9-7) are coming off a 3-2 victory at Houston on Wednesday night, which was their first win against the Cougars since April 4, 2006. Alyssa Vordenbaum improved to 2-3 on the year after allowing a pair of unearned runs on just four hits, while striking out a season-high six. Megan Low picked up her team-leading 16th RBI of the campaign and she continues to lead the squad and rank fifth in the Western Athletic Conference with a .425 batting average. UTSA’s team ERA now stands at 2.56, which is second in the circuit.
Meanwhile, the Bearkats (7-10) are coming off an 8-3 loss at No. 5 Texas A&M on Wednesday night and they have lost four of their last six outings. Sam Houston State owns wins against Baylor, Illinois State, Jacksonville State, Southern Mississippi, Texas State and Texas Tech. Tori Benavidez boasts a squad-leading .356 batting average, while Hilary Adams paces the team with four homers and 16 RBIs. Shelby Lancaster anchors the pitching staff with a 5-3 record and 2.35 ERA. She has made 11 appearances with three shutouts and has recorded 20 strikeouts in 56.2 innings of work.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 38-35, including a 19-14 mark in San Antonio. The Roadrunners and Bearkats split a doubleheader in their previous meetings on April 6, 2012.
