SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will host Nicholls this weekend in a two-game Southland Conference series. The set gets underway at 6 p.m. on Friday before wrapping up the next day at 2 p.m. The Roadrunners will honor seniors Alaina Byars, Nikki Goff, Caitlyn Ivy, Ashley Kappler, Laura Little and Morgan Luksa prior to Saturday’s contest as part of their annual Senior Day festivities.
UTSA (20-24, 9-7 SLC) will look to rebound from Tuesday's doubleheader sweep at the hands of I-35 rival Texas State. The Roadrunners can clinch a spot in the Southland Tournament with a series sweep.
Junior Haylee Staton (12-6) enters the weekend with a 2.57 ERA and she has allowed just one earned run on eight hits in her last 22.1 innings of work. The Austin native did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning and yielded just three in the opener against the Bobcats. Freshman Megan Low collected a team-high four hits in the twinbill and her .388 batting average ranks second in the league.
The Colonels (12-27, 6-8 SLC) come to the Alamo City in seventh place in the conference standings. Nicholls split a doubleheader at McNeese State on Tuesday and handed league-leading Texas State one of its two Southland losses on April 1.
Ashley Bertot leads the offense with a .387 batting average, while reigning Southland Player of the Year Ashley Ray checks in with a .374 average to go along with seven homers and 27 RBIs. Ashton Bennett leads the team with a 7-8 record and 3.17 ERA in the circle. Katie Moulder (5-14, 3.34 ERA) has logged the most time on the pitching rubber and she has amassed 65 strikeouts in 125.2 frames.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 38-27, and has won six of the last seven meetings, including a three-game sweep of the Colonels last season at Roadrunner Field.
