SAN ANTONIO — UTSA returns to the diamond this weekend for a two-game Southland Conference home series against UT Arlington. The Roadrunners and Mavericks will square off at 6 p.m. on Friday and the series concludes with a 2 p.m. tilt the following day.
Saturday’s series finale will serve as UTSA’s annual Strike Out Cancer game. T-shirts will be sold for $10 with all proceeds benefitting the San Antonio Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of former UTSA player Hope Ortiz.
After splitting a doubleheader with Houston Baptist earlier in the week, the Roadrunners enter the series with an 18-22 overall record, while their 7-5 Southland mark is good for fifth place in the league standings. Junior Haylee Staton earned her 10th victory and moved to a tie for fourth on the league’s wins list in the opener against the Huskies. Meanwhile, senior Morgan Luksa closed out the contest with 1.2 scoreless innings to move into a tie for the circuit's lead with three saves. Freshman Megan Low led the offense with a career-high four hits, including a pair of doubles, to improve her batting average to a team-best .381. UTSA continues to hold a team batting average near .300 and it enters play this weekend hitting at a .297 clip.
The Mavericks (13-19, 3-7 SLC) have dropped six of their last eight league games and are 1-3 on the road in Southland play this season. Erica LeFlore leads the offense with a .300 batting average, four home runs and 13 RBIs. UT Arlington's pitching staff owns a 2.57 ERA, led by Teri Lyles’ 2.38 mark and 7-9 record. Callie Collins, the 2011 Southland Pitcher of the Year, has a 6-10 record to go along with a 2.82 ERA.
UTSA leads the all-time series, 39-30, and will face UT Arlington for the first time since knocking the Mavericks out of the 2011 Southland Tournament with a 4-3 victory in 11 innings. UTA swept a three-game series in San Antonio last season and has won five of the last seven contests against the Roadrunners.
