SAN ANTONIO —
UTSA will look to extend a six-game Southland Conference winning streak when it concludes the regular season at I-35 rival Texas State this weekend. The three-game series begins with a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and the regular season finale is slated for 1 p.m. the next day.
After back-to-back sweeps of Central Arkansas and Nicholls, the Roadrunners (25-24, 15-12 SLC) have won six straight conference games and eight of their last 10 games overall. UTSA nearly knocked off No. 3 Texas on Tuesday in Austin, falling 2-1 in eight innings.
Freshman Molly Fichtner went 3-for-4 at the plate in that contests and she continues to lead the team in 10 offensive categories, including batting average (.364), hits (51), doubles (11), home runs (10) and RBIs (32). Senior Danyé Holmes allowed just one unearned run and three hits against the Longhorns to lower her team-leading ERA to 2.01, a mark that ranks fourth in the league.
The Bobcats (26-20, 17-7 SLC) come into the weekend third in the conference standings, one spot ahead of UTSA. Texas State has won 11 of its last 13, including nine consecutive Southland contests.
McKenzie Baack is hitting .314 and her 24 RBIs lead the team. Chandler Hall has been a duel threat, hitting .348 with a home run and 18 RBIs in 66 at-bats and she ranks second on the squad with 12 wins and a 2.94 ERA. Anne Marie Taylor ranks sixth in the Southland in wins (13) and ERA (2.07).
Texas State leads the all-time series 35-30 despite dropping two of three games to the Roadrunners last season, including the series finale 7-1 on April 24. The Bobcats own a 20-7 advantage in San Marcos.
