No. 14 Baylor downs UTSA on Wednesday night, 7-1
SAN ANTONIO — Recap.
Jade Smith went 2-for-2 with an RBI for UTSA, but No. 14 Baylor jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and cruised to a 7-1 win over the Roadrunners on Wednesday evening at Roadrunner Field.
Smith tied her season high for hits and collected her first RBI since a Feb. 22 win over Bryant. Jori Fox doubled for the Roadrunners (20-27), while Jolene Graham, Taylor Oberg and Vivian Tijerina also collected hits for the home squad.
Ari Hawkins went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Robin Landrith had a pinch-hit two-run homer to aid the Bears, who improved to 33-12 and bounced back from a pair of home losses to No. 16 Louisiana on Tuesday. Ace Whitney Canion came on in relief to earn her 19th win of the season with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Baylor touched up UTSA starter Chelsea Parker, who took the loss and fell to 3-7 on the season, for two runs in the first and another in the second for a 3-0 lead.
However, the Roadrunners broke the shutout and chased Bears starter Liz Paul from the contest in the fourth.
Tijerina singled before she was lifted for pinch-runner Victoria Birdwell. Tess Soefje then got on base after being hit by a pitch, the 26th time she has been plunked this season, to set up Smith. The sophomore chopped a single over the pitcher’s circle and by the time it was fielded, Birdwell was racing home ahead of the throw to the plate.
The hit ended Paul’s night and Canion ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.
The Bears would go on to add two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to provide the final margin.
UTSA loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with one out against Heather Stearns, but she was able to get a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
The Roadrunners will be back in action with a 3 p.m. (CT) doubleheader at UTEP (15-30, 7-11 C-USA).
