UTSA to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday night
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will return to the friendly confines of Roadrunner Field on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest against former Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Roadrunners (12-17) are coming off a series loss at North Texas last weekend, where the Mean Green took two of three games. UTSA hit five home runs in the final two contests, including two each from Madison Kinley and Siera Sproul, and its 30 home runs this season lead Conference USA. One reason for the surge has been league-leader Megan Low’s 11 round-trippers, which also is tied for the top mark in the nation and is more than double her previous best for a season (five). In the circle, Kacy Freeze’s seven wins and 71 strikeouts continue to lead the pitching staff, while Nicole Merrill owns a team-low 3.20 ERA.
Meanwhile, the Islanders (7-19) also dropped a conference series last weekend with a pair of losses at Northwestern State. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will conclude a six-game road trip with its game in the Alamo City. Dani Tefft (.364) and Valerie Perez (.363) lead the Islanders offense, which is batting .303 through the season’s first 26 games. Perez also paces the squad with 20 RBIs, while Brittney Morse’s five homers lead the team. In the circle, Liz Carter has seen the majority of the playing time with a 6-8 record, 5.47 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 93.1 innings.
UTSA leads the all-time series 29-17 and owns a 15-5 edge in San Antonio. The Roadrunners defeated the Islanders by a score of 10-4 on Feb. 22 at Roadrunner Field as part of the UTSA Mid-Major Classic.
