UTSA announces signing class on Monday

SAN ANTONIO — First-year head coach Michelle Cheatham announced the addition of four student-athletes to her program on Monday.

Kendall Burton (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point HS), Lizzy Fox (Sugar Land, Texas/Fort Bend Christian Academy), Erica Sanchez (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek HS) and Lauren White (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) each signed a National Letter of Intent in the early signing period and will debut for the Roadrunners in 2015.

“I am excited to bring in this class, have the opportunity to work with them and see them grow both as athletes and individuals,” Cheatham said. “There are a lot of positive elements that each of these girls bring on top of a strong desire to become part of the Roadrunners family.”

Below is a breakdown of this year’s class.

Kendall Burton, OF
Missouri City, Texas (Ridge Point HS)
Plays for head coach James McClanahan at Ridge Point High School in Missouri City, Texas … as a sophomore and junior she earned first-team all-district and All-Fort Bend County honors … also picked up honorable mention all-state accolades following her junior season in which she scored 33 runs, collected 32 RBIs and swiped 22 bases … hit .429 in league play and led the Panthers to a fifth-place finish in the 4A playoffs … played club softball with the Texas Storm-Wymer 18Gold.

Cheatham on Burton: “Kendall not only brings speed to our outfield and lineup, but she has a ton of energy and an excitement to learn. These are attributes that are in high demand, especially in a team setting.”

Lizzy Fox, P
Sugar Land, Texas (Fort Bend Christian Academy)
Plays for head coach Kelly Ferguson Carroll at Fort Bend Christian Academy in Sugar Land, Texas … a three-time TAPPS all-district selection, she also earned first-team all-state honors following her sophomore and junior seasons … also tabbed the district’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and earned TAPPS 4A All-Tournament Team honors her freshman and junior seasons … helped lead the Eagles to the TAPPS 4A state title in 2013 and a runner-up finish in 2011 … played club softball with the Texas Peppers.

Cheatham on Fox: “Lizzy brings a fiery competitiveness to the mound that is fun to watch. She is a competitor in the circle and that is exactly what you want out of that position.”

Erica Sanchez, IF
Houston, Texas (Cypress Creek HS)
Three-year letterwinner for head coach Randy Kight at Cypress Creek High School in Houston, Texas … was a first-team All-District 17-5A selection as a sophomore and junior after earning district Newcomer of the Year honors as a freshman … led the Cougars as a junior in batting average (.446), hits (33) and RBIs (30) … also a three-time District 17-5A All-Academic selection … played club softball with the Texas Firecrackers.

Cheatham on Sanchez: “As a middle infielder, Erica’s athleticism is very impressive. She has great hands and it is exciting for our coaching staff to be able to work with the tools that she brings to the table.”

Lauren White, OF
Corona, Calif. (Santiago HS)
Plays for head coach John Perez at Santiago High School in Corona, Calif. … played club softball for the Corona Xpress 16U and Diamonds 18U … helped lead her Corona Girls Softball Association (CGSA) 14U team to a ninth-place finish at Western Nationals and was named a CGSA 12U All-Star … also a member of National Honor Society and Black Student Union.

Cheatham on White: “Lauren is one of those players that you find and just can’t wait to get to campus and work with. Her speed and athleticism are traits that can make our lineup and outfield that much more competitive.”
