Tulsa ends UTSA's season with 1-0 victory on Thursday
TULSA, Okla. — Claire Nicholson scored the contest’s only goal in the 56th minute to lift Tulsa to a 1-0 victory against UTSA on Thursday night at Hurricane Stadium.
Goalie Bubba Makela made eight saves for the Roadrunners, who saw their season end with a 5-12-2 overall record (4-4-2 C-USA). Kaytee O’Brien and Happy Orere-Amadu each recorded a pair of shots for UTSA, which was outshot, 19-6.
Meanwhile, the Golden Hurricane (10-6-3, 4-3-3 C-USA) secured a spot in next week’s Conference USA Tournament with the victory.
Nicholson led the offense with five shots and Jordan O’Brien tallied four and an assist. Goalkeeper Hayley Harryman made three stops en route to her 10th shutout of the campaign.
Makela faced eight shots in the opening half and came away with four saves, while the Roadrunners managed a pair of shots against the Tulsa defense.
However, neither team managed a goal until the 56th minute, when Jordan O’Brien found Nicholson on a corner kick. The winner was Nicholson’s fourth of the season and it proved to be enough.
The Golden Hurricane had a chance to extend their lead in the 64th minute when Makela was whistled for a yellow card and Jordan O’Brien was awarded a penalty kick. The freshman came up with a save to keep the deficit at 1-0, but the Roadrunners offense was not able to get on track, as it was limited to just one shot attempt over the final 13 minutes.
