IRVING — Bubba Makela was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. She is the first player to earn the weekly award two times this season.

The Mukilteo, Wash., native helped UTSA pick up four points in the standings this past weekend with a 3-0 victory against Southern Miss and a scoreless draw with league-leading Colorado College to snap its nine-match winning streak.

The freshman now has five shutouts on the season, including four in C-USA action, after recording 200 scoreless minutes to lower her goals-against average to 0.95 in conference play. Makela faced six shots and made a pair of saves to top the Golden Eagles on Friday night before seeing 21 shots and registering seven stops against Colorado College.

In addition to being the first two-time recipient this season, she is the only freshman to be named the circuit’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Makela and the Roadrunners (4-10-2, 3-2-2 C-USA) will be back in action on Friday when they play an 8 p.m. (CT) contest at UTEP (10-4-3, 3-2-2 C-USA).
