SAN ANTONIO — UTSA and Florida Atlantic played to a scoreless draw in the Conference USA opener for both squads on Friday night at Park West Athletics Complex.

Goalie Bubba Makela recorded four saves en route to her second shutout of the campaign for the Roadrunners (1-8-1, 0-0-1 C-USA). Meanwhile, Laylla da Cruz paced the offense with three shots and Kaytee O’Brien and Happy Orere-Amadu each added a pair.

Courtney Zwetsch matched Makela’s effort with four saves for the Owls (2-6-2, 0-0-1 C-USA). Claire Emslie led the visitors with three shots, including one on goal.

Both defenses played well early, keeping either team from recording a shot until the ninth minute when Brianna Livecchi’s offering went wide of the net.

Florida Atlantic looked to take a lead in the 30th minute when Emslie picked up a loose ball in front of the UTSA goal and put one past Makela, but the play was blown dead for offsides.

The Roadrunners’ best scoring chance came in the 90th minute, when da Cruz sent a shot toward Zwetsch following a corner kick, but the keeper kicked aside the attempt and sent the contest to extra frames.

Playing in its first overtime match since last season’s finale against Texas State, UTSA limited the Owls to just one shot in the first extra period and tallied three of its own over the final 10 minutes.

However, neither squad could find the back of the net, which resulted in UTSA's first scoreless draw since Oct. 12, 2007, against Stephen F. Austin.

The Roadrunners will be back in action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Rice (3-3-2, 1-0 C-USA)
