SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will look to pick up its first victory of the season this weekend when it hosts the UTSA Classic. The Roadrunners will face Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. on Friday night before squaring off with Lamar at 1 p.m. two days later. South Dakota State also is in the four-team field.

UTSA (0-2), which will play its next four matches at home, is coming off last Sunday’s 1-0 loss at No. 12 Texas A&M. Playing in front of 1,869 fans, the Roadrunners matched the Aggies until the 79th minute, when Shea Groom provided the game’s only score. Freshman goalie Bubba Makela made 13 saves, which was the most by a UTSA keeper since Dacia Webb collected a school-record 16 against Baylor on Sept. 3, 2010, in her first collegiate start. Makela notched 10 saves in the second half and now has 16 in 135 minutes of action this season.

The Bearkats (1-0) opened their season last Sunday with a 6-0 win against Texas Southern. Mariah Titus led the way offensively with a pair of goals on just three shot attempts, while Ashley Alonzo and Kaisa Marshall each recorded a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Kylie Hambleton and Magen Ross combined to shutout the Lady Tigers with four saves. Prior to the season, Katie Ferrara picked up first-team All-Southland Conference honors for Sam Houston State, which was picked to finish sixth in the league.

Meanwhile, the Lady Cardinals (1-1) come to the Alamo City after a 3-2 setback at Northern Arizona on Sunday. Lamar fell behind 3-0 before scoring twice in the final four minutes of the contest. That came two days after opening the campaign with a 3-2 triumph against Prairie View A&M. Kimmy Albeno and Jennifer Yacuta lead the offense with two goals apiece, while Bailey Fontenot has played every minute in goal and has made eight saves. Lamar was tabbed by Southland coaches to finish second in the league and the squad received a pair of first-place votes.

UTSA leads the all-time series with Sam Houston State, 6-2, and holds a 4-0-1 edge against Lamar. The Roadrunners topped the Bearkats, 2-0, in the last meeting between the two clubs on Oct. 2, 2011, in San Antonio. Meanwhile, UTSA and Lamar played to a 1-1 tie 19 days later that season.
