SAN ANTONIO — UTSA outshot I-35 rival Texas State, 21-17, but Kelsie Townsend’s goal in the 109th minute gave the visiting Bobcats a 1-0 victory on Sunday. The setback ended the Roadrunners' season at 3-12-2 overall (2-4-2 WAC).
With just 96 ticks remaining in the second overtime, Townsend collected the ball off a deflection by the
Roadrunners and her shot sailed just over the head of goalie Katarina
Pus and under the crossbar for the win. The strike was Townsend’s first
of the season and it secured a berth in next week's Western Athletic Conference Tournament for Texas State (7-11-1, 4-4 WAC).
UTSA outshot Texas State, 19-12, in regulation and had several
opportunities to grab the advantage, but goalkeeper Natalie Gardini
and the Bobcats defense did just enough to keep the Roadrunners off the
scoreboard.
Junior Laylla da Cruz and freshman Simone Boye paced the Roadrunners offense with five shots apiece, while Lynsey Curry recorded seven Texas State.
