UTSA to host TCU in exhibition match on Friday afternoon
SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will host TCU at 2 p.m. on Friday in an exhibition match at the Recreational Sports Complex. It will be the second and final exhibition contest for the Roadrunners, who took on Lamar on Wednesday in Beaumont.
UTSA was picked to finish in a tie for sixth place in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Preseason Polls that were released last week. Seventh-year head coach Steve Ballard returns 14 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished with a 9-9-2 mark, including a 5-3-1 record in Southland Conference play.
Junior defender Anka Grotle was named to the preseason All-WAC Team after logging a team-high 1,779 minutes on the pitch in 2011. She has started all 43 contests the past two seasons and helped anchor a defense that has produced 18 shutouts during that time, including a school-record 10 in 2010.
Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs return 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad that posted a 7-11-1 record and finished fifth in the Mountain West Conference. Led by first-year head coach Eric Bell, TCU also welcomes 11 freshmen to the program, which will begin its first season as a member of the Big 12 Conference this fall. The Horned Frogs lost their top seven scorers from a season ago, but they will bring back goalie Alicen Wright, who recorded four shutouts in her freshman campaign.
TCU has won all five previous regular season meetings between the two schools, including a 4-1 victory in the last meeting on Sept. 24, 2010, in the Alamo City.
The Roadrunners will open regular season play on Friday, Aug. 17, at Houston Baptist.
