SAN ANTONIO —
No. 4 seed UTSA will begin its Southland Conference Tournament title defense at 7 p.m. on Thursday when it faces fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana in Natchitoches, La.
The Roadrunners (8-8-2) are unbeaten in five (four wins/one tie) of their last six outings. The only defeat in that stretch came in a 1-0 decision against the Lady Lions in last Sunday's regular season finale.
Led by two-time first-team all-conference pick Anka Grotle, UTSA has allowed just three goals in its last six contests. Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle Snyder, who was an all-league honorable mention selection on Tuesday, has allowed just 0.65 goals per match en route to a 6-1-2 record and three shutouts this fall.
Pacing the offensive attack for the Roadrunners is sophomore Maria Jose Rojas. The Santiago, Chile, native was named second-team all-conference for the second time after leading the team with 20 points (eight goals/four assists) in the regular season. She was joined on the second team by freshman Liv Nyhegn, who is tied with Rojas for the team lead with eight goals to go along with four assists.
Southeastern Louisiana (11-6-1) finished with a 5-4 mark in Southland play after losing just once en route to the 2010 regular season title. Three Lady Lions players were named first-team all-conference, led by forward Maiya Cooper, who is second in the league in points (30) and goals (12). Midfielder Kelsey Salcido joined Cooper on the first team, while defender Kyle MacIntosh made her second appearance on the league’s top squad.
The Lady Lions own a 6-1 all-time record against UTSA, but the Roadrunners handed Southeastern Louisiana a 1-0 overtime setback in last year's championship match.
The winner of Thursday’s match will move on to face top seed Stephen F. Austin (14-2-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday.
